A Seat Is Not A Licence#

Getting an MBBS seat feels like the finish line. For families borrowing to pay for it, it is closer to the starting gun. A private medical college can cost more than a house, and a foreign degree adds a licensing exam at the end that most candidates do not clear on the first attempt.

That combination makes the MBBS loan different from any other education loan. The interest rate matters. But the structure of the loan, meaning how big it is, when repayment begins and what has to happen before you can earn, matters more.

I have looked at the published terms of SBI, Bank of Baroda and other lenders, the National Medical Commission's (NMC) 2021 regulations as summarised by education portals, and the latest results of the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). The picture is sobering in places, and I have tried to keep it balanced.

Background: The Vocabulary Of Medical Financing#

MBBS. The undergraduate medical degree. In India it takes 4.5 years of study plus a one-year compulsory rotating internship.

NEET-UG. The single national entrance test for undergraduate medical seats in India, and, under current rules, a requirement for most Indians who want to study medicine abroad and later practise at home.

NMC. The National Medical Commission, which regulates medical education and practice in India. Its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 set the conditions under which a foreign medical degree is accepted.

FMGE. The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination, a screening test that graduates of foreign medical schools must pass to register with a medical council in India.

Government quota, management quota and NRI quota. Seats in private colleges are split into categories with very different fees. Merit-based seats carry regulated fees. Management and NRI seats can cost several times more.

Collateral. Property or deposits pledged to the bank. Margin is your own contribution to the cost. Moratorium is the repayment holiday, usually the course period plus a year.

What A Private MBBS Costs In India, And What The Bank Will Lend#

Fees vary enormously by state and quota. For the 2026 session, approved annual fees at private medical colleges in Maharashtra range from ₹7.50 lakh to ₹17.13 lakh, according to a medical admissions portal. Broader estimates from education sites put private fees at ₹7 lakh to ₹30 lakh a year, and the total cost of the course from about ₹40 lakh to more than ₹1.5 crore, depending on the college and quota. Treat these as reported figures, not official prices, and check your own college's approved fee schedule.

Banks are used to this. SBI's Student Loan for courses in India works on the standard structure: up to ₹7.5 lakh without collateral, and above that collateral is required, at 9.40 per cent on its June 2026 rate card. Comparison sites report SBI limits of ₹30 lakh for Indian medical courses and up to ₹1.5 crore with adequate collateral for some routes. Given that these figures come from third-party summaries, confirm the exact ceiling with the branch.

Two schemes deserve a look if your seat qualifies:

SBI Scholar Loan covers premier institutions on SBI's list, with collateral-free limits of ₹30 lakh to ₹50 lakh for the top three tiers. Check whether your medical college is on the list.

PM-Vidyalaxmi offers collateral-free, guarantor-free loans for merit admissions to institutions on the government's quality list, at any loan size. That list includes central government institutions and top-ranked institutions in the NIRF rankings, and NIRF ranks medical colleges as a category. The catch is that management quota admissions are excluded. So a student on a merit seat at a listed college may qualify. One on a management seat at the same college will not.

What Banks Fund, And What They Do Not#

An MBBS loan is a loan against a fee schedule, not against a wish list.

Usually covered. Tuition and other fees in the college's approved fee structure, hostel charges where the hostel is run by or approved by the college, books, equipment, exam fees, a refundable caution deposit and, in some schemes, a laptop. For study abroad, add travel and living costs.

Usually not covered, or only with difficulty. Fees that do not appear on an official receipt from the institution, payments to agents or consultants, and amounts the bank considers above the reasonable cost of the course. Banks pay the institution directly against fee demands. A seat that requires large cash payments outside the fee schedule is a red flag for your loan and for your college.

Margin. Under the standard national model, margin is nil up to ₹4 lakh and 5 per cent above that for courses in India, and 15 per cent for study abroad. Some premier schemes have no margin above ₹7.5 lakh. Ask your lender, because you will need cash for the margin early on.

Moratorium. Typically the course plus one year. An MBBS runs longer than most degrees, and repayment starts a year after the course ends, whether or not you have found work.

Education Loan For MBBS Private And Foreign Colleges 2

Foreign MBBS: The NMC Rules That Decide Whether The Loan Is Safe#

Loans for study abroad tend to be larger and have higher margins. But before the money question, there is a regulatory one. A foreign degree only leads to practice in India if it satisfies the NMC's rules. Summaries of the 2021 FMGL Regulations, which the NMC notified on 18 November 2021, commonly list these conditions:

  • NEET-UG must be cleared before admission to the foreign institution.
  • At least 54 months of education at the same institution, in a course that includes theory and practical training.
  • A minimum 12-month internship, completed at the same foreign institution after the course. Clinical training cannot be split across institutions or countries.
  • English as the medium of instruction, and the mandatory subjects listed in the regulations' schedule.
  • A mandatory licensing exam in India before registration. At present that is the FMGE.

The NMC does not publish an approved list of foreign universities. That is a policy stance, and it means the burden of checking falls on you. Verify each of the conditions above with the university in writing, before paying a deposit and before applying for a loan.

Cost. Careers360 puts the total cost of studying MBBS abroad at ₹25 lakh to ₹1 crore or more, depending on country and college. Lenders will consider foreign MBBS loans through their overseas schemes, such as SBI's Global Ed-Vantage or Bank of Baroda's Baroda Scholar, and through non-banking lenders. Most will want the course to comply with the NMC rules and will look at the university's recognition. Ask each lender whether it lends for your specific country and college, as policies vary.

The FMGE Problem: A Risk Banks Do Not Put On The Sanction Letter#

Here is the number that families should see before they sign.

The FMGE result for June 2026 was announced on 7 July 2026. Of 36,280 candidates who appeared, only 4,635 qualified, a pass rate of 12.78 per cent. For comparison, the pass rate in June 2025 was reported at 18.61 per cent, and in the December 2025 session at about 23 to 24 per cent, according to Careers360 and news reports. These numbers include repeat attempts, so they do not tell you the chance for a first-time graduate of a well-run programme. But they do show that the exam is a serious hurdle, not a formality.

Why does this matter for a loan? Because the loan's repayment plan assumes you will be earning shortly after your course ends. For a foreign MBBS graduate who is still preparing for or retaking the FMGE, that assumption can fail. The moratorium typically ends a year after the course. Coaching and repeat attempts cost more. Meanwhile, interest keeps accruing on a loan that may be in the tens of lakhs.

I would not use this to argue that nobody should study medicine abroad. Many graduates qualify, practise and repay comfortably. The point is that the risk is real and it lands on the borrower and the co-applicant. So plan for it, and do not assume the best case.

Here is how the routes compare.

Structuring The Loan More Safely#

Check compliance before finance. Get the university's confirmation that its course meets each NMC condition. Do this first, since the loan follows the course and not the other way round.

Borrow the smallest sum the course really needs. Use scholarships and family funds first. A margin you fund yourself is interest you never pay.

Ask for a longer moratorium and clear terms. The IBA model allows extension for course completion of up to two years in some cases. Ask in advance how the bank treats the gap between graduation and licensing. Put any concession in writing.

Service the interest if you can. Paying interest during the course, even partly, keeps the balance from ballooning. Many lenders offer a rate concession for it.

Insure the borrower. Lenders often offer life cover on larger loans, and it may be worth having if a co-applicant's property is the security.

Be wary of agents. "100 per cent loan approval" and "no NEET needed" are not promises anyone honest can keep. Insist that every payment is made to the institution against an official receipt.

Model a bad scenario. Suppose the FMGE takes two attempts and two extra years. Recalculate your total interest for that case. If the family cannot carry it, reduce the loan or choose a different route.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Which bank gives the best education loan for MBBS in India?

It depends on your seat. SBI's Student Loan covers most medical courses with collateral above ₹7.5 lakh, its Scholar Loan and PM-Vidyalaxmi give lower rates at listed institutions, and other public sector banks run similar schemes. Compare written sanction letters from at least two lenders.

Can I get a collateral-free loan for MBBS?

Up to about ₹7.5 lakh under standard schemes. Above that, collateral is normally required, unless your college is on a premier or PM-Vidyalaxmi list. PM-Vidyalaxmi excludes management-quota admissions, so a merit seat matters.

Do banks give loans for MBBS abroad?

Yes, through overseas schemes such as SBI's Global Ed-Vantage, Bank of Baroda's Baroda Scholar and non-banking lenders. They generally expect the course to meet NMC rules, and larger loans need collateral. Policies differ by country and university, so confirm before you apply.

What are the NMC rules for foreign MBBS?

Under the 2021 regulations, you must clear NEET-UG before admission, study at least 54 months at one institution, complete a 12-month internship at the same institution and study in English. You must also pass the FMGE in India before registration. Verify these conditions in writing with your university.

What is the FMGE pass rate?

The June 2026 session had a pass rate of 12.78 per cent, with 4,635 of 36,280 candidates qualifying. June 2025 was reported at 18.61 per cent. Rates fluctuate between sessions and include repeat attempts.

Will the bank fund capitation or donation payments?

Banks lend against the institution's approved fee structure and official receipts. Payments outside that structure are unlikely to be financed and can create serious legal and financial trouble. Insist on receipts for every payment.

How long is the moratorium on an MBBS loan?

Usually the course period plus one year, though the exact terms vary by scheme. For a foreign degree, ask how the bank will treat the period you spend preparing for the licensing exam, and get any extension in writing.

Figures and rules were checked on 26 September 2026: SBI's rate card (effective 9 June 2026), the IBA Model Education Loan Scheme, the PM-Vidyalaxmi guidelines, NMC regulations as summarised by Careers360 and education portals, and FMGE results reported by DT Next and Careers360. Fee ranges are reported estimates. Confirm details with the college, the university and your lender.
