Before Anything Else: It Is IIT Madras, Not IIT Roorkee#

A persistent error is circulating about GATE 2027, and it matters because candidates use the conducting institute's name to find the official portal.

GATE 2027 is being conducted by IIT Madras. IIT Roorkee conducted an earlier edition, which is where the confusion originates, and the organising institute rotates annually among the IITs and IISc.

The official portal for this cycle is the GATE 2027 site hosted by IIT Madras. If you land somewhere else, you are reading last cycle's information, and last cycle's information is exactly how candidates miss a registration deadline.

Speaking of which: registration opened on 2 September 2026 and closes on 27 September 2026, with a late-fee window running to 5 October 2026. If you are reading this at publication, that window is days from closing.

Background: What GATE Actually Is, And What It Buys#

The examination. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a national examination conducted jointly by the IISc and seven IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board. It tests comprehensive understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in engineering, science, humanities and related disciplines.

What a GATE score is used for. Three distinct things, and candidates frequently know only the first.

Postgraduate admission. MTech, ME and MS programmes at the IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and a very large number of other institutions. Also direct doctoral admission at several institutions.

Public sector recruitment. A substantial group of public sector undertakings recruit graduate engineers using GATE scores rather than conducting their own examinations. This is a major and underappreciated use of the score.

Fellowship eligibility. A qualifying GATE score is required for the MHRD assistantship that funds many postgraduate students, which is the difference between a funded and an unfunded degree.

The score validity. A GATE score is valid for three years from the date of announcement, which means one good attempt can serve multiple admission and recruitment cycles.

Two terms worth defining:

GATE Score versus marks. Your raw marks are converted to a normalised GATE Score on a scale up to 1000, which accounts for difficulty variation across sessions of the same paper. Institutions and employers use the GATE Score, not your raw marks.

Qualifying marks versus admission cut-off. Qualifying means you cleared the minimum and receive a scorecard. That is a long way from the score required for admission to a particular programme or recruitment by a particular employer.

The 2027 Cycle, Confirmed#

The GATE 2027 cycle, end to end 2 Sept 2026 Registration opens 27 Sept 2026 Application closes Late fee to 5 Oct Feb 2027 Examination across six days 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 19 Mar 2027 Results declared Papers and the two-paper rule 30 test papers in total New: Robotics and Automation You may sit one paper, or two from the permitted combination list. Not any two. Indian nationals require a verified DigiLocker account to register for GATE 2027. Confirm all dates, the paper list and permitted combinations on the official GATE 2027 portal hosted by IIT Madras.

The new paper. Robotics and Automation joins the list, taking the total to 30 test papers. This reflects where engineering employment and postgraduate research are actually moving, and it gives candidates from mechanical, electrical, electronics and computing backgrounds a more directly relevant option than the general papers they previously had to use.

The DigiLocker requirement. Indian nationals must register using a verified DigiLocker account for this cycle. This is an administrative change with a practical sting: if your DigiLocker is not set up and verified, that is a task to complete before you can apply, not during the application. Candidates who discover this on the closing day do not apply.

The Two-Paper Rule, Explained Properly#

Candidates may sit one paper or two, and this is where mistakes happen.

You cannot choose any two papers. GATE publishes a specific list of permitted two-paper combinations, and your second paper must be one that the organising institute has paired with your first. The combinations are built around subject overlap and around scheduling, since the two papers must fall in different sessions.

When a second paper is genuinely worth it.

When it widens your admission options meaningfully. A candidate whose primary paper leads to a narrow set of postgraduate programmes may find that a permitted second paper opens a considerably wider set.

When it opens different public sector recruitment. Employers specify which GATE papers they accept, and a second paper can make you eligible for a different set of organisations.

When the syllabus overlap is high. If the second paper shares a substantial portion of its syllabus with your first, the marginal preparation cost is low and the option value is real.

When it is not worth it.

When the overlap is thin. Preparing two substantially different syllabuses splits your effort and usually produces two mediocre scores rather than one strong one.

When you already know your target programme and paper. A candidate certain about a specific MTech specialisation gains little from a second paper and loses preparation time.

When the two papers fall in sessions that require travel between distant centres, which is a practical consideration worth checking against the published schedule.

The default advice. One paper, prepared properly, beats two prepared adequately for most candidates. Take a second only when you can name the specific programme or employer it unlocks.

What The Score Is Worth Beyond An MTech#

This is where GATE's value is systematically underestimated by candidates who think of it purely as a postgraduate entrance.

Public sector recruitment. A significant group of public sector undertakings in energy, petroleum, power and heavy engineering recruit graduate engineer trainees using GATE scores. These are well-paid permanent positions with structured progression, and the recruitment runs on a GATE score you were going to obtain anyway. The cut-offs are set by each employer, they vary by discipline and category, and they are typically considerably higher than the qualifying mark.

Funded postgraduate study. A qualifying score unlocks the assistantship that funds most MTech students. The difference between a funded and self-funded postgraduate degree across two years is substantial.

Direct doctoral entry. Several institutions admit directly to PhD programmes on a GATE score, sometimes with additional assessment.

Three years of validity. Because the score lasts three years, one strong attempt can serve postgraduate admission this year, public sector recruitment next year, and doctoral admission the year after. Candidates who treat GATE as a single-use ticket underuse it.

Preparing With The Time That Remains#

With the examination in February 2027 and registration closing imminently, the preparation runway is roughly four months.

Work from the official syllabus document, not from a coaching summary. GATE syllabuses are revised between cycles, and the 2027 cycle has noted syllabus updates for at least one paper.

Previous year papers are the highest-value resource. Fifteen years of them exist, they are freely available, and they describe the examination more accurately than any commentary. Work through them topic by topic after covering each topic, rather than saving them for the end.

Build for depth rather than breadth in core subjects. GATE rewards genuine understanding of fundamentals over broad shallow coverage. The questions frequently combine two concepts, which defeats memorisation.

Practise the numerical answer type questions specifically. These carry no options to eliminate and no partial credit, and candidates who have only practised multiple choice find them uncomfortable.

Take full mocks under timed conditions from month two, not month four. The three-hour endurance and the pacing discipline are trainable and they do not appear on their own.

And set up DigiLocker today if you have not. It is a prerequisite rather than a formality, and it blocks the application entirely.

The Final Week, And The Examination Day Itself#

Preparation ends earlier than candidates think. The last week is for protecting what you have built rather than adding to it.

Stop new topics. Anything learnt in the final week will not be reliable under three hours of pressure, and the anxiety cost of feeling unprepared in a new area outweighs whatever marks it might have produced.

Revise from your own error log. By this point you should have a document listing the questions you got wrong across months of practice, organised by topic. That is a personalised description of your weaknesses and it is worth more than any textbook at this stage.

Consolidate your formula sheets. One page per subject, revised daily. Most GATE papers reward a candidate who can recall a standard relation instantly rather than deriving it under time pressure.

Settle your attempt strategy in writing. How you will move through the paper, when you will abandon a question, how you will handle numerical answer type questions where no options exist to eliminate. Rehearse it in your final two mocks so that nothing on the day requires improvisation.

Check the admit card details against your identity document. Name spelling, date of birth, photograph. Discrepancies discovered at the centre are not resolvable there.

Locate the centre in advance. GATE centres are frequently in outlying areas with unreliable directions. An hour spent finding it the weekend before removes a genuine source of examination-day stress.

On the day, use the tutorial period properly. Interfaces vary, and a few minutes spent understanding the question palette, the review markers and the on-screen calculator is time recovered many times over.

And pace by section rather than by question. Three hours across a broad paper rewards steady progress. Candidates who spend fifteen minutes on one stubborn problem in the first hour rarely recover the time.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Which institute is conducting GATE 2027?#

IIT Madras. IIT Roorkee conducted an earlier edition, which is the source of a widely circulated error. The organising institute rotates annually among the IITs and IISc.

When is GATE 2027 and when do applications close?#

The examination runs on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results declared on 19 March 2027. Registration opened on 2 September 2026 and closes on 27 September 2026, with a late-fee window until 5 October 2026.
