The new 1-6 scale#
Since 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT reports each section and the overall score on a scale of 1 to 6, in half-point steps. The overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half: an average of 5.125 becomes 5, and 5.25 becomes 5.5.
Each score lines up with the same CEFR level in every section and overall:
| Score | CEFR level |
|---|---|
| 6 | C2 |
| 5 - 5.5 | C1 |
| 4 - 4.5 | B2 |
| 3 - 3.5 | B1 |
| 2 - 2.5 | A2 |
| 1 - 1.5 | A1 |
Old scores and the 0-120 scale#
Until January 2028, score reports also carry a comparable score on the old 0-120 scale: the middle of the 0-120 range that matches your overall score. The calculator shows that whole range. Scores from before the change stay valid for two years from the test date, and universities may state their requirement on either scale.
For an old score, the calculator converts your 0-120 total to the new overall score, and each 0-30 section to its new band, using ETS's own table. The sections do not convert evenly: a 22 is 4.5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 4.5 in Writing and 4 in Speaking.
